The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), likely to facilitate recruitment for the unified Railway Group A Service - Indian Railway Management Service (IRMS). The new service will come into effect from the next recruitment cycle after the consultation with DoPT and UPSC. IRMS will unite all the existing Railway Services recruited through the Civil Services Examination (CSE) and Indian Engineering Services (IES) conducted by UPSC. The decision to unite all eight services of Indian Railways was taken to make officers work in cohesion for the development of Railways. It will also help Railways to recruit engineers/ non-engineers as per requirement.
UPSC IRMS To Roll-out Without Indian Railway Protection Force Service (IRPFS) The Government has decided to withdraw the railway posts from Engineering Services Examination (ESE) and Civil Services Examination (CSE) after the introduction of Indian Railway Management Services (IRMS). The government has decided to give exception only to the post of Indian Railway Protection Force Service (IRPFS) under Group A Service.
Aspirants who are aiming for Indian Railway Management Service (IRMS) have to appear for the Preliminary examination just like other competitive exams conducted by UPSC. They can specify their preference in the second stage of the selection process. The preferences comprise of five specialities - four engineering specialities (Civil, Mechanical, Telecom and Electrical) and one non-technical speciality, which will focus on accounts, personnel and traffic. Currently, UPSC is recruiting candidates for Indian Railways through two examinations such as Civil Services Examination (CSE) and Combined Engineering Services.
